Building a career in aviation

Jeff O’Sullivan’s aviation journey began in the small North Island town of Thames, New Zealand. In 1980, he left school to start an aircraft engineer apprenticeship with Thames Aerial Top Dressing, working on fixed-wing top dressing aircraft. What began as an entry into the workforce quickly developed into a lifelong passion for aviation—one that continues to define his career today.

Seeking broader opportunities, Jeff relocated to Auckland, where he joined Flight Engineers at Ardmore Airport. There, he continued his apprenticeship, gaining valuable experience across a wider range of aircraft. He later moved to Airwork (now Salus Aviation), also based at Ardmore, where he completed his training and, in 1984, qualified as a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.

Over the past 45 years, Jeff has built an exceptional career in helicopter maintenance. Beyond technical excellence, he has played a pivotal role in developing people—training, mentoring, and leading engineers who have gone on to successful helicopter maintenance careers around the world.

Jeff holds helicopter type ratings for BK117, AS355, AS365, B222, B427, AS350, B206, and MD500. Jeff has been instrumental over the years in managing the hangar Maintenance Division, at times overseeing a team of more than 60 engineers, certification personnel, and administrators across bases in Auckland, Queenstown, Dunedin, Perth, Bolivia, and Africa. Known for his hands-on leadership style, Jeff’s commitment extends well beyond the standard workweek, reflecting his dedication to both his team and customers.

Supporting New Zealand Police aviation

In 1988, the relationship with the New Zealand Police began, flying a small helicopter for cannabis recovery operations, evolving in 1989 into a formal air surveillance contract for a single Bell Jet Ranger, supporting Auckland during a period of frequent armed bank robberies. Jeff played a critical role in the contract’s long-term success, helping achieve 99% availability and reliability dispatch across three AS355 helicopters.

The contract ran continuously for 31 years, delivering significant operational outcomes and accumulating more than 55,000 flight hours. His contributions also helped drive technical innovations that enhanced capability and performance, forming an important part of New Zealand Police aviation history.

In 2010, the Air Support Unit was recognised with the Salute to Excellence MD Helicopters Law Enforcement Award at HAI.

In 1991 the business commenced maintenance and lease services to the Air Ambulance Services throughout New Zealand, Jeff has supported the operators of various aircraft in a lead maintenance capacity. What began with the maintenance of two AS350 helicopters soon grew into a major operation supporting approximately 80% of the country’s air ambulance BK117 fleet, around 12 helicopters.

In 2025 Jeff received the AEANZ Peter Lacy Shield, for Commitment to Service Award.

International maintenance operations

His expertise extends well beyond New Zealand. Jeff has established and supported maintenance operations in challenging and diverse environments including Papua New Guinea, Bolivia, Africa, Nepal, Taiwan, Australia, Fiji, Thailand and Guinea. Many of these operations were created to support temporary large-scale contracts, with several continuing successfully under his guidance today.

Driven by service, community, and people

Outside of aviation, Jeff is also a dedicated member of his local volunteer fire brigade in Auckland—further reflecting his long-standing commitment to service and community.

A big part of the helicopter aviation industry is the people who work in it, and the commitment they have to creating and maintaining high standards of service and professionalism. That is where Jeff gets the most satisfaction from his career: seeing engineers grow, develop their skills, and build lifelong careers in aviation.
