From “Why Not?” to a Career That Took Off: Miri’s Story

Not everyone in aviation starts out with a clear flight path.
For Miri Teokoitu, Salus Aviation’s Warehouse & Logistics Manager, the journey began somewhere completely different—on the warehouse floor of a retail business, with no connection to aviation at all.
“I honestly knew nothing about aviation before this,” she says.
Back in 2006, Miri was working as an inwards goods clerk when a friend from Airwork reached out with an opportunity. A warehouse role, closer to home and offering better pay, was enough to prompt a change.
“I thought, why not?”
By February 2007, she had taken the leap into aviation—starting a career that would span nearly two decades - and counting.
In November 2018, her next move was as straightforward as it was symbolic: crossing the airfield to join Oceania Aviation, now Salus Aviation, where she continues her journey today.
Built on People, Driven by Purpose
Ask Miri what’s kept her at Salus Aviation for so many years, and the answer is immediate.
“It’s the people—and the vibe.”
For her, it’s about working alongside a team that supports each other, shares the workload, and keeps things interesting. No two days are the same, and that’s part of the appeal.
“There’s always something new happening—never a dull moment.”
But beyond the day-to-day variety, there’s a deeper sense of purpose. Miri takes pride in knowing that her work—and the work of her team—makes a tangible difference across the business.
Some of her most memorable moments aren’t tied to personal milestones, but to seeing her teammates recognised.
“I love it when someone from my team gets a shout-out for going above and beyond. That’s always awesome to see.”
Adapting, Improving, Evolving
Over the years, Miri has seen the Warehouse and Supply Chain environment evolve significantly.
“We’ve changed a lot because we’ve had to,” she explains, pointing to shifting customer expectations, new technologies, and the constant pace of the aviation industry.
At its core, the team’s focus is simple: be helpful, be efficient, and make life easier for the people they support.
“When we find better ways to do things, we can get more done, fix problems faster, and really see the impact we’re making.”
That continuous improvement mindset has done more than streamline operations—it’s strengthened relationships across the organisation. As trust builds, collaboration becomes easier, and outcomes improve.
“We’ve evolved not just to keep up, but to make a real difference.”
Rising to the Challenge
Like many in aviation, Miri points to COVID-19 as one of the most defining periods of her career.
“It turned everything upside down.”
Suddenly, the team was navigating supply shortages, changing regulations, and entirely new ways of working—all while maintaining operations.
“It was tough,” she admits, “but it showed how resilient and resourceful we can be.”
The experience didn’t just test the system—it strengthened it.
A Team That Has Your Back
For Miri, the standout feature of working in the Warehouse & Logistics team is the camaraderie.
“There’s a real sense of teamwork. We’re always helping each other out, sharing ideas, and having a few laughs—even when it’s busy.”
It’s an environment where everyone brings something different to the table, and learning from each other is part of the everyday.
And sometimes, it’s the simple things that matter most.
“There’s nothing better than morning tea or lunch get-togethers. It’s a chance to step away, have a laugh, and catch up.”
Those moments, she says, are what bring the team closer and make the workday more enjoyable.
It’s also what sets the team apart.
“We genuinely care—about each other and about getting things done right. Everyone’s ideas are valued, and we’re always looking for ways to improve.”
Lessons That Last
After years in the industry, Miri has learned that success comes down to one essential thing: communication.
“No matter how good your systems are, things can fall apart if people aren’t on the same page.”
Taking the time to listen, be clear, and build strong relationships has made a lasting impact on how she approaches her work.
“It’s key to getting the job done right—and keeping everyone motivated.”
Advice for Those Starting Out
For anyone new to the team—or the industry—Miri keeps her advice simple:
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions and get stuck in.”
She’s quick to point out that everyone starts somewhere, and making mistakes is all part of the learning process.
“Take the time to learn from the team, lend a hand where you can, and most importantly—enjoy it.”
Because at the end of the day, it’s the people around you who make the journey worthwhile.
“The team’s got your back.”
Behind every aircraft is a network of people ensuring the right parts are in the right place at the right time.
Through Miri’s story, it’s clear that at Salus Aviation, that responsibility is carried not just with skill and efficiency—but with pride, resilience, and a strong sense of team.
