Our Journey to Excellence: Dave Rye

David (Dave) Rye
Meet “The Propeller Man”

To the local and international aviation community, Dave Rye is simply known as "The Propeller Man." It's not uncommon for customers to call specifically asking to be transferred to "Dave in the Prop Shop." While this is by no means a reflection on the capabilities of the rest of our highly skilled propeller team, it speaks volumes about the reputation Dave has built over more than four decades in the industry.

Throughout his career, Dave has developed strong, enduring relationships with customers through his approachable nature, exceptional technical knowledge, and unwavering commitment to finding the right solution for every propeller maintenance challenge. His calm, methodical approach inspires confidence, and even under pressure, he remains composed, consistently delivering outstanding outcomes and satisfied customers.

Dave's contribution extends well beyond customer service. He has played a pivotal role in developing the next generation of propeller engineers, patiently passing on the specialised skills of propeller repair and overhaul. His willingness to mentor others, share his knowledge, and teach with patience and precision has left a lasting impact on countless colleagues.

With his depth of experience, technical expertise, and outstanding reputation, Dave has become one of Salus Aviation's most respected and valued team members.

A Career Spanning More Than 40 Years

Dave began his aviation career in 1977 with NZ Aerospace Industries (later Pacific Aerospace), working in the Aero Chrome Plating Division where he specialised in plating cylinder bores, hydraulic ram spears, shafts, and pins.

In 1984, he moved into the Pacific Aerospace Propeller Shop, overhauling propellers, governors, and hose assemblies. He later broadened his experience by working in the Fuel Bay, testing and overhauling fuel system components, hydraulic pumps, and actuators.

Recognising his leadership and technical ability, Dave was appointed Propeller Shop Manager in 1988.

When Pacific Aerospace sold its component maintenance and workshop operations to Aeromotive Overhauls Ltd, Dave transitioned with the Propeller Shop and continued leading the team under the new ownership.

Never one to stop learning, Dave further expanded his expertise by achieving:

  • Level 2 Certification in Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI)
  • Level 2 Certification in Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
  • Level 1 Certification in Eddy Current Inspection (ECI)

These qualifications significantly enhanced both the company's capabilities and the services available to customers.

During periods of staff shortages, Dave demonstrated remarkable versatility by taking sole responsibility for the Fuel Bay for two years, before helping operate the Electrical Bay alongside one other engineer for the following year.

As the business evolved through several ownership and name changes — from Aeromotive Overhauls Ltd, to Aeromotive Ltd, Oceania Aviation Ltd, and now Salus Aviation — Dave remained the constant. His dedication ensured the Propeller Shop maintained its outstanding reputation for quality, reliability, and customer service.

A Lasting Legacy

Since 2021, Dave has gradually transitioned from full-time to part-time work, this planned transition has enabled Carey Pyper to step into the role of Propeller Shop Manager while providing valuable opportunities for other engineers to develop their skills.

Despite reducing his hours, Dave continues to be an invaluable mentor, generously sharing his knowledge and experience while remaining a trusted source of advice for both colleagues and customers.

More than 40 years after beginning his career, Dave's legacy is evident not only in the countless propellers he has maintained but also in the people he has mentored, the customers who continue to seek him out, and the enduring reputation of the Propeller Shop.

Dave Rye remains a true asset to Salus Aviation, and his contribution to our business and the aviation industry is both significant and enduring.
